"French Painters V -- Pissarro and Sisley."

Bates contributed two of nine essays printed in Apollo between February and December of 1952 (his second essay is "French Painters IV -- Signac and Cross"). Kenneth Towndrow was responsible for essays 1-3, and Eric Newton contributed essays 6-9. In this essay, Bates discusses the hostility that greeted the works of Pissarro and Sisley, provides some biographical background on the two artists, and expresses a appreciation of the works reproduced in the article.
