"Modern Short Stories."
In this review of Modern Short Stories, a collection of stories each originally published in Lovat Dickson's Magazine, Bates criticizes the selection policy of both the magazine and the collection, but also praises any attempt to produce a magazine devoted solely to the short story. Bates gives special mention to D.H. Lawrence's early tale "Strike Pay," which "should stand as a text piece for all who would write about the poor." In Time and Tide (November 30, 1935, p. 1765).
