"The Grace Note."
A humorous tale of a family of brass players, the Chipperfields, of their devotion to music, their jealousy and stubbornness, and of a single "grace note" that dashes their dreams of a Chipperfield band and rends the family apart. The tale displays Bates's knowledge of musical terminology and repertoire. In the Fortnightly (May 1936, 145:541-547), Daily Mail (September 18, 1936), Hotch Potch (ed. John Brophy, The Council of the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital, 1936).
