Creating or Editing Content

ID Numbers

Numbers available:
ax10-; bx8-; x63- ; cx171-; dx3- ; e316-
Note that the entry for Flying Officer X Stories has ID s3. This is the only one starting with "s."

To create a new entry, click "content" under "content management" at top left, then "create content," then "page." The other option, "Story," is used for this and other text documents (Welcome, Search Tips, About...) that do not use the field format that has been created for Bates's writings.

To edit an existing entry, click the "edit" tab as opposed to "view."

Code

Only two types of coding are used in the pages: italics and links. In addition, stories have some elements in bold.

This is <em>italic</em>.
<a href="/node/x"> creates a link, where x is a node number.
Frequently those two pairs are used together, for instance:
<a href="/node/3"><em>Achilles the Donkey</em></a>
Note that both the coding for a link and for italic must be closed using the backslash as above.

And this is <strong>bold</strong>.

All of these are input as Pages, including the cross-references (x1-62). Note however the purpose of cross-references: to provide access in the title field to alternative forms of a work's title (for someone using expert search). The cross-reference then sends the user to the "main" entry; only in the main entry are further details about the work provided (date, publisher, etc.) This saves the user unnecessarily retrieving double-entries (main and cross) for a given work.

Style guidelines for specific fields:

There are two required title fields with identical data. Book titles are not in quotes and there is no coding for italics. All other titles (articles, stories, essays, poems) are in quotes.

For new entries, use ID numbers as available below.

Word count has been done through a sampling of five lines or so, then multiplied by number of lines in a page and numbers of pages, with adjustments for blank pages and large blocks of blank lines. I have generally rounded to the nearest ten.

Bear in mind that multiple publishers (as well as topics, document types, and book review categories) are allowed. On a Mac, holding the command key down while clicking a publisher name will add it to others already selected (or delete it without deleting the others). For procedures on adding a new publisher name, see below.

Year of publication is always a single year. I believe there may be a case or two where an arbitrary date was chosen from a number of years possible for publication date. The body of the entry would then need to explain this.

Topics are very much an undeveloped feature of the Companion, but one should attempt to identify significant specific topics, following the information given under "Search Tips."

Adding a new field value
If a publisher name needs to be added to the dropdown menu, this is the procedure, which applies as well to values in the other dropdown menus.

Under "content management -- page -- manage fields -- publisher" scroll to "approved values list" and add the publisher name to the alphabetical list. Click "save field settings" at bottom.

Multiple document types are common, especially for newly-discovered entries which will typically be "Eads, Additions to" and "Full-text online" as well as possibly other types.

Multiple book review categories are also not uncommon for those columns where Bates reviews a variety of books.

Attachments

After creating the PDF, using the appropriate cover sheet giving copyright, information, click "file attachments" and "attach new file" then either "attach" to remain in edit mode for the entry, or "save" to complete the attachment and enter view mode.
